Maximizing Range in the Lineage 1000

The Embraer Lineage 1000 has a maximum listed range of 4600NM, but this does not account for reserves, alternate fuel, contingency fuel, ETOPS restrictions, or wind conditions. This article explains the best practices for long-range flights.

In practical use, pilots should expect an operating range closer to 4000NM, with a shorter effective range when flying westbound due to headwinds. Nevertheless, we have verified on numerous test flights that our Lineage 1000 can reach 4600NM when flown correctly.

Key Considerations for Long-Range Flights

  • Max range is theoretical—the actual range depends on payload, weather, and planning.

  • Plan conservatively: Aim to land with at least 500kg more fuel than SimBrief’s estimate.

  • Westbound flights require extra fuel due to stronger headwinds.

Best Practices for Maximum Range

  • Step climbs improve efficiency: Step 2000ft every ~600NM.

  • Start at FL340 westbound / FL350 eastbound, then climb as fuel burns.

  • Limit payload to ~700kg for long-range flights.

  • Monitor winds aloft: Avoid step climbs into stronger headwinds.

SimBrief Flight Planning

We have an updated SimBrief Airframe Profile compatible with the EFB, available here. To match the marketed range in SimBrief, adjust these settings:

  • Cruise profile: M.78

  • Fuel factor: P00

  • ETOPS Planning: Disabled

  • Plan Step Climbs: Enabled

  • Passengers: 8

  • Contingency Fuel: None

  • Alternate Airport: Within 100NM of destination

  • Winds Aloft: Disabled (set in Debug Parameters for still-air conditions)

Example KDEN-EDDF flight demonstrating these settings: Click here to load the flight. This plan ensures the aircraft has just enough fuel for a 4554NM trip.

Example Flight Profile: 4600NM Mission

For a 4600NM flight, the following conditions should be met:

  • 8 passengers

  • Mach 0.78 cruise speed

  • Landing with NBAA IFR Fuel Reserves:

    • 5-minute approach at sea level

    • Climb to 5000ft, 5-minute hold

    • Climb to cruise altitude, diversion to alternate

    • Cruise at long-range power, descend and land with 30 minutes of holding fuel

With correct thrust, climb performance, and fuel settings, the Lineage 1000 should reach its maximum range while maintaining reserve fuel as per NBAA rules.

Final Thoughts

Maximizing range requires smart planning, proper fuel management, and adjusting for real-world factors like wind and step climbs. Follow these guidelines to achieve the longest possible flights in the Lineage 1000 while ensuring safe fuel margins.
